During his time on earth, family togetherness and the values that came from a loving, nurturing home he had growing up, became interwoven in the fabric of his life.  Along with all the traditional family activities, Matthew also helped with maintenance work at the family Dairy.  As an athlete, his true love was football because it meant working as a team.

From 1987 - 1993, Matthew attended his parent's Alma Mater, Southern Illinois University's Carbondale Campus on a full athletic scholarship.  He graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management and Airway Science, and as a three year letterman with their Salukis Varsity Football team.

Shortly after his passing, teammates Chad Gregory and Scott Gabbert hosted the 3rd Annual “Matthew Meier Salukifest Golf Outing” in Gibson City, Illinois raising funds to create a memorial in Matthew’s honor.   Along with teammates Dwayne Summers and Andy Darnell, the S.I.U. Faculty, Athletic Dept.'s Groundskeepers, and the J.W. Reynolds Monument Company a gorgeous Pine Oak Tree was planted and memorial headstone erected beside it and together they were strategically placed between the players’ locker rooms and the football field along the path players cross to and from every game.  Both were formally dedicated on October 25, 1997, Letterman’s Day, at S.I.U.

The ceremony began with a passionate testimonial of Matthew’s impact on his peers by Jim Rung, fellow teammate and one of Matthew’s groomsmen, followed by the sharing of ivory and fuscia orchids, and tea leaves that were used for a Hawaiian Toast.  Afterwards Matthew’s parents and family were escorted onto the McAndrew Stadium football field to accompany the team captains in a commemorative coin toss in Matthew’s honor.

Matthew's memory lives on through S.I.U. 's "Matthew K. Meier Faith Family Friendship Fortitude Future Aviation Management Scholarship Endowment Fund", presented each fall during the program’s annual awards banquet.  Send your donation to:  S.I.U. In the end, his wife of 5 months, Katie Orlando, both his parents, his brother Eric, his brother Jason with wife Erica, and his sister Michelle, were all at his bedside when Matthew passed away.
